In 1953 my parents, Anne and Ollie Kathan, along with Ollie’s brother, Elmore, converted an old chicken coop into a greenhouse, lined out perennials in the yard, and began a landscaping and garden center business in Wendall, NH. Kathan Gardens was born.
In the fall of 1955, having already outgrown their location, my parents found a piece of land with an old house on the top of a hill in Newport that had been on the market for quite some time, and decided this would be their new home. So, with my 3 year old sister, Nancy, and me on the way, Ollie and Anne moved to our present location, and the rest is history.
Kathan Gardens now consists of 16 greenhouses for growing and showing our beautiful plants, as well as a gift shop and a variety of display areas showcasing our statuary, outdoor furniture, gardening decor and supplies.
While much has changed since our humble beginnings, Jill and I still try to live up to the examples that were set for us. Hard work pays off, good quality plants will always sell, and treat your customers and employees the way you hope to be treated.
We hope you will enjoy a visit to Kathan Gardens soon.
