Our History

In 1953, Anne and Ollie Kathan, along with Ollie’s brother, Elmore, converted an old chicken coop into a greenhouse, lined out perennials in the yard, and began a landscaping and garden center business in Wendall, NH. Kathan Gardens was born.

In the fall of 1955, having already outgrown their location, Anne & Ollie found a piece of land with an old house on the top of a hill in Newport that had been on the market for quite some time, and decided this would be their new home.  Dennis and Jill Kathan continued running the business once Ollie and Anne retired until February 2021 when Jill and Chris McIntyre purchased Kathan Gardens.

Kathan Gardens now consists of 16 greenhouses for growing and showing our beautiful plants, as well as a gift shop and a variety of display areas showcasing our outdoor furniture, home decor, gifts and gardening supplies.

While much has changed since our humble beginnings, our staff try to live up to the examples that were set for us. Hard work pays off, good quality plants will always sell, and treat your customers and each other the way you hope to be treated.

Kathan Gardens consists of over 20,000 sq. feet of greenhouses and covered sales areas as well as a gift and garden shop with a country porch. Located in Newport, NH on 11 ½ acres on top of Claremont Hill, we hope you will enjoy browsing our grounds while looking for ideas that will help to enhance your outdoor living spaces.

Our Staff

We are extremely proud of our hard working and devoted staff at Kathan gardens. How fortunate we are to work year in and year out with such talented people, most of who have worked here for several years.

In 2022, you will see most of the same happy faces you have come to expect here each spring with some wonderful new additions. We welcome the new, and we welcome back our regulars. Though we are privileged to have these loyal employees, we are even luckier to have them as friends. We hope that when you visit us at Kathan Gardens, you will see and feel the difference these hard working people are making here.
