Our Story

In 1953, Anne and Ollie Kathan, along with Ollie’s brother, Elmore, converted an old chicken coop into a greenhouse, lined out perennials in the yard, and began a landscaping and garden center business in Wendall, NH. Kathan Gardens was born.

In the fall of 1955, having already outgrown their location, Anne & Ollie found a piece of land with an old house on the top of a hill in Newport that had been on the market for quite some time, and decided this would be their new home.  Dennis and Jill Kathan continued running the business once Ollie and Anne retired until February 2021 when a new family, the McIntyres, purchased Kathan Gardens.  Chris and Jill McIntyre worked closely with Dennis and Jill Kathan to learn about the business and to capture the essence of the place. The McIntyres have modernized some of the mechanical parts of the business to reduce labor, but have also begun to bring in different types of horticulture (annuals, perennials, shrubs & trees) especially natives.

Kathan Gardens now consists of 16 greenhouses for growing and showing our beautiful plants, as well as a gift shop and a variety of display areas showcasing our numerous perennials, annuals houseplants & trees and shrubs, home decor, gifts and gardening supplies.

While much has changed since our humble beginnings, our staff try to live up to the examples that were set for us. Hard work pays off, good quality plants will always sell, and treat your customers and each other the way you hope to be treated.

Kathan Gardens consists of over 20,000 sq. feet of greenhouses and covered sales areas as well as a gift and garden shop with a country porch. Located in Newport, NH on 11 ½ acres on top of Claremont Hill, we hope you will enjoy browsing our grounds while looking for ideas that will help to enhance your outdoor living spaces.

Deeply rooted in our local community, Amie and Callie, longtime Croydon residents, bring a wealth of experience. Amie's landscaping mastery and Callie's garden expertise converge to revive the cherished legacy of Kathan Gardens. Together with Jim, they embark on a journey to rekindle the magic that has made our garden shop a local treasure.
